The Nigerian Air Force plane crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft has killed 25 people after the aircraft went down near Igbokoda in Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that the 25 people on board comprised 20 passengers and five crew members.
The aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos when it crashed near the naval base in Igbokoda.
The incident occurred on October 5, prompting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order an immediate and thorough investigation into the crash.
The President also declared three days of national mourning for the deceased personnel and directed that national flags be flown at half-mast.
The aircraft was on a routine mission when air traffic controllers lost contact with it, according to reports on the incident.
There were no survivors.
The crash initially produced conflicting figures about the number of people on board. The State House initially said the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members, putting the total at 32.
The later figure from the Nigerian Air Force, reported by Reuters, put the total number of people on board at 25, comprising 20 passengers and five crew members.
The difference between the figures has not been independently explained in the official material available.
President Tinubu expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of those who died and directed the relevant authorities to establish what caused the accident.
The investigation is expected to examine the aircraft, its maintenance history, flight operations, weather conditions, communications and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.
No cause of the crash has been officially established.
The incident has renewed attention on the risks faced by military personnel carrying out operational and routine duties.
The Nigerian Air Force and other relevant authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
