The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has sealed the headquarters of Kaduna Electric in Kaduna over alleged outstanding statutory tax liabilities.
The enforcement action was carried out at the company’s headquarters on Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna, following a non-compliance notice issued on the authority of NRS Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji.
The notice said the owners and operators of the premises had failed to meet their statutory tax obligations despite previous notifications from the revenue authority.
The NRS said the action was taken under the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act and other applicable tax legislation.
A Kaduna Electric official who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria confirmed that the notice had been placed at the company’s premises.
The official said customers were directed to leave because there were no staff available to attend to them.
The NRS warned against removing or interfering with the sealed notice without authorisation and directed taxpayers seeking clarification or resolution to approach its Debt Management and Enforcement Department in Abuja or the nearest enforcement office.
The action comes as Kaduna Electric faces wider financial and regulatory challenges.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently dissolved the company’s board and appointed an interim management team to oversee its operations.
NERC said the intervention followed severe operational inefficiencies, failure to meet required capital expenditure targets and a cumulative market debt exceeding ₦456.5 billion.
Kaduna Electric distributes electricity across Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
The tax enforcement is separate from the company’s wider market debt, and the NRS action does not by itself establish the amount of tax allegedly owed by Kaduna Electric beyond what is stated in the enforcement notice.
