Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Amusan clocked 12.34 seconds in the final to finish second behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won gold in 12.22 seconds. Netherlands’ Nadine Visser completed the podium in 12.39 seconds.
The result gives Nigeria its first medal at the inaugural championship, which is being held from September 11 to 13 in Budapest.
Russell entered the final as the favourite after breaking Amusan’s world record at the Zurich Diamond League in August with a time of 12.09 seconds. She maintained her strong form to claim another major victory.
Amusan, the former world record holder, produced a determined performance to secure second place and return to the global podium after a challenging period in her season.
The Nigerian had earlier advanced to the final after finishing second in her semi-final heat with a time of 12.49 seconds.
Her silver medal also comes with a $75,000 prize, while Russell receives $150,000 for winning the event.
Amusan’s result adds another major international medal to her career and keeps her among the leading athletes in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship features some of the world’s leading track and field athletes and carries a total prize fund of $10 million.
The competition continues in Budapest through Sunday, September 13.
