Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has withdrawn his candidacy for the position of Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Tijani announced his decision on Friday, saying he would remain focused on advancing Nigeria’s domestic digital transformation agenda.
His withdrawal ends his bid for one of the ITU’s senior leadership positions as the United Nations specialised agency prepares for its next leadership cycle.
The ITU is responsible for coordinating international cooperation on telecommunications and information and communication technologies, including issues relating to digital connectivity, spectrum management and global technology standards.
Tijani’s candidacy had attracted attention because of his role in Nigeria’s efforts to expand the country’s digital economy and strengthen its position in global technology discussions.
Before joining the Federal Government, Tijani was involved in Nigeria’s technology and innovation ecosystem and co-founded Co-Creation Hub, a technology innovation centre focused on supporting startups and entrepreneurs.
As minister, he has overseen initiatives involving digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, technology skills and the broader development of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Tijani’s withdrawal means he will continue to focus on Nigeria’s domestic technology agenda rather than pursuing the international position.
The minister had earlier been appointed Chair of the ITU Council for 2026, giving Nigeria a prominent role in the organisation’s activities this year.
His decision comes as Nigeria continues efforts to expand digital infrastructure, develop technology talent and increase the use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, across the economy.
